I remember one particular run when I was 'farming' birthday-cupcakes in pre-searing; 2 White dyes and 2 Black dyes in one 3-minute-round, at the third dye, I went from 'impossible!' to '*eyes-pop-out*.
A memorable day...
The entire weekend was good, I got 8 black dyes and 5 white dyes total in those 5 days of GW-third-birthday. old times...

I dropped 4 black dyes :
-one from a Wolf, in Pre
-one from a lvl 2 Stalking Nephila
-one from a Rider boss in Post Ascalon (can't remember its name)
-last one was in Nahpui Quarter, probably from a Tengu.

3. Charr north of Frontier Gate

I think any monster that drops a dye is capable of dropping a black dye or any other color, it's just a matter of luck and percentages.

Hmmm... black dyes... tend to get mine from random monsters, but regulary from earth elementals, raptors, mindblade spectres or banished dream riders...

In my 3 years, and over 2000 hours put into the game, I have 1 Black Dye drop from a Scythe of Chaos in Tombs.

In my 3+ years of play, I've found 15 so far. It's hard to remember where they all came from, but I do know that at least 2 came from Pre-Searing bandits.

For me, it is the white dyes that have been hard to find. Granted, they have only existed in the game for a fraction of the time of black dyes, but to date, I've only found 2 of them.

P.S. If you want to farm dyes, Pre-Searing is one of the best places to do it.

Those are the most recent ones I remember, I know I have had a few more drop but can't remember where.

Edit: reading a previous post I now remember my first black dye drop. It was from an Undead in Nebo Terrace back in early 2006

Had 3 or 4 from the Stone Elementals outside of Ascalon/Sardelac <NM> also had 2 rubies from them as well.
